❓ Trivia Question
What year did Fairmont incorporate as a city?
Answer at the bottom.

Marion County Fall Colors

πŸ•°οΈ A Stroll Through Our Hometown

Before Fairmont had its name, the land here was deep forest and farm. In 1817, Boaz Fleming’s sons cleared forty acres for a new settlement called Middletown. By 1843, it became Fairmont β€” a nod to our β€œfair mount,” overlooking the rivers where the Tygart Valley meets the West Fork and forms the Monongahela.

Historic Fairmont Postcard

Marion County was created in 1842, named for Revolutionary War hero Francis Marion (β€œThe Swamp Fox”). Coal, glassmaking, and the B&O Railroad helped us grow β€” but it’s always been our people who give this place its pulse.
